Going To The Sun Road

Planning my 09 No. Tier ride. How many miles is it from the east side at the beginning of the restricted rd. to the end of the restriction on the west side and approx. how many hrs. on a loaded bike? Article mentions Apgar turnoff to south end of Lake McDonald. also mentions from west ent. Logan Creek to Logan Pass.
Thanks for your help. Fred Lonas

I'm sorry, I don't know the exact mileages. But for some help the climb from St Mary lake to the summit is a piece of cake compared to the climb up from the west side. There is about 10 miles of flat to rolling between the bottom of the grade and Apgar Village. The climb from the west is 14 miles at 8% grade. Had to get on it early in the morning but it wasn't that bad. Made it in plenty of time. After camping a night or two, the ride back up from St Mary's and down to Lake Mc Donald was a harrowing but fun downhill!

May the wind at your back always smell like home.

Well, looking at ACA Northern Tier Section 2, map #24, it's 9 miles from Apgar to Lake McDonald, and Sprague Creek Campground is 1 miles before Lake McDonald. (thus, about 8 miles of restriction.) That's the flat part.

It's 12 miles from Logan Creek to Logan Pass.  And that's a slow crawl.  Including sightseeing stops and rest stops, I'd allow 3 hours for a loaded bike.

I am  interested in  some of the  same  info...Can  one  leave Apgar  and make it  to  the  top of Logan Pass before the road is restricted?  What  are the rstriction  hours?   Would it be  possible  to  ride back down to Apgar at  4 or  when  restrictions  are lifted?
We would  like to  stay outside of  the park West entrance  and  ride  to   top  and  back  in same  day.Is  this  a  possibility?

On Going -to-the-Sun Rd. the section between Apgar Campground and
Sprague Campground along Lake McDonald (for riders in both directions)
and the section from Logan Creek to Logan Pass (for eastbound riders)
are closed to cyclists from 11 AM to 4 PM between June 15 and Labor Day.
The ACA groups try to allow 5-6 hours to get to Logan Pass by 11 AM, but
they are riding with loaded bikes. At the pass you can hike, explore and
rest until 4 PM when you can descend back the way you came up. It is
doable in one day.
