Crossing Jamestown bridge in RI

What is the best way to cross the Jamestown bridge in Rhode Island around Newport?

I am taking the Atlantic Coast route later this summer and not sure how to cross this bridge.

I read that there is a pedestrian path to walk the bike but the DOT is not confirming it.

Anyone crossed this bridge recently? How?

I believe that the bridge is still closed to all bike and pedestrian traffic.  The bridge was designed to allow bikes, but the main access road (Route 138) no longer allows bikes. Work is supposedly going on to alleviate this, now that the old bridge has been demolished.

The RIDOT recommends that one use a bus to cross -- buses are equiped with bike racks.

If time is not an issue, and the weather is nice, you could catch a ferry from Pt. Judith (Narragansett, RI)  to Block Island, ride the island, and catch a return ferry to Newport.

Actually, unless you want to see Newport, or the beaches, the biking in RI is much better in the western parts of the state.

The Atlantic Coast Route does not go into RI.
