Biking Across New York
« on: August 01, 2008, 04:42:23 pm »
I just finished biking across New York from Buffalo to Albany along the
Erie Canalway Trail.  I thought people here would find it interesting.
Check it out...

After you watch, come back here and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

James

Very entertaining video. The route looks interesting, too. May give it a run this fall. Thanks for the submittal.

Erie Canalway Trail is great!  Lot's of history along the way.

But, shame on you for not wearing helmets.

Actually, I was wearing a helmet and I encouraged my friends to, but they
didn't want to.  I knew someone would eventually say something about
that.

I have personally destroyed two helmets. While wearing them. In both crashes I didn't even get a headache. Without the helmet(s) I would have probably suffered a fractured skull. I DID get a fractured skull in 1972 (construction accident). It was a very painful and enlightening experience. I never ride without a helmet.

I'm thinking of doing this trip with my family.  How much of the trail was paved versus stone dust?  Were there nice towns along the way for overnights?  I have two picky teenagers and one 7 year old on a trailer bike.

Hi, Abigail:
Take a look at
http://www.ptny.org/bikecanal/index.shtml
They have lots of details on the trail. My wife and I just ordered their trail guide for a possible tour when the leaves change. Good riding.

There is about 1/3 paved trail, 1/3 crushed limestone and 1/3 on the
road.  If the weather is wet, then you really can't pedal on the crushed
limestone and have to use the road.

When you check out this page that was listed above,

http://www.ptny.org/bikecanal/index.shtml

you should notice that ptny.org has linked
to my video on that page.  The director of the Parks and Trails New York
felt like the video was a good representation of what it was actually like to
ride the Erie Canaway Trail.
