Does anyone have suggestions for easy to moderate routes cycling in
China for three to four weeks? I'm an experienced cyclist, 11 months
cycling in India and Southeast Asia, also five months cycling Europe/
Lapland to Tunisia. I'd like to go to China in fall 2009 or spring 2010, am
in initial stage of research, would like to go with group but not a formal
tour organization because they're too expensive. Would anyone be
interested in doing this with me?

Hi Lolo,

My name is Fred Bouwman and I am interested in your experience biking in Europe for 11 months. I am committed to work until June 30, 2010 (in Bermuda) and then want to take off for a few years and bike. My intial plan is to fly home to Toronto and bike south to Argentina (across the Northern Tier of U.S, then the Pacific Coast, then through Central/South America).

At that point I would fly home to Toronto and regroup and then go to Europe.

I am not sure about China at this point as I want to limit the number of plane rides I do, too much hassle, but I'm always keen on hearing about others trips.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your interest. I found biking in India and SE Asia to be a really
great, if sometimes tricky, way to go. I flew to Bombay by myself, then
met other travellers along the way, then bought a great English
mountainbike from a woman who had given up on her plan to cycle the
world. Biked, stayed places, biked on, etc. Flew bike and self to Thailand
and continued north, then south, down to Indonesia. I biked Europe 10
years before that, on a five-month trip. Scandinavia was particularly
amazing; peaceful, beautiful.

My husband and I rode for five weeks in China a few years ago.  We spent a week around Beijing, then through the Guiyang and Guangxi provinces.  Our journals are at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/laurawtravel  Let me know if you have specific questions... Laura

I'm also going to China for biking this summer for 2-3 weeks after the total solar eclipse in July (2009).  I'm hoping to bike 700-1000 miles on a self-supported route though an area with interesting history and scenery.  Since I'm flying in and out of Shanghai, I'm considering a route along the Grand Canal from Suzhou to Tianjin, or perhaps just a loop around Anhui Province.  Another option I'm considering is downhill from Xian to Nanjing or even all of the way to Shanghai.  I have a Bike Friday folding back with a trailer and case, so I'm flexible about where I start and end up.  I suspect that Guangxi and southern areas will be too hot in July for biking, but I don't know.  Any advice about traveling or biking in China would be appreciated.
