Riding in all 48 states?
« on: November 24, 2008, 04:34:53 pm »
Have come to a turning point in my life and need a change. Have thought about doing something like this for years.

I'm looking for info on a route that anyone has taken to ride in all 48 states? How long would or did it take? Are there any good books out there that I could read about doing this?

I understand that it could be done in many different ways.

Thanks
Chuck

"America At 10 Miles Per Hour, A 17,300-Mile Bicycle Journey" by John W. Triggs is probably still in print (Mid-continent Publishing, P.O.Box 172167A, Kansas City, KS 66117 or try amazon.com). He hit all 48 states in 411 days in 1993-4. His pace was leisurely and he really did it on the cheap, usually camping in the wild.

You've got me thinking. I've hit 44 states by bicycle - six to go: Maine, West Virginia, North Dakota, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii. I ought to work on the first four.

I got the Maine and Alaska part done of your list, litespeed.. been to hawaii, but did a backpack and not a ride.

I hosted via warmshowers.org a couple that was riding all 50 states, trying to hit the geological center of each state, and hence, by transition, riding in each state, they were on their way to NYC when I hosted them for one night... let me see if I can remember their website:

nice couple and they were on a pretty slick tandem.

If you google ---bicycling the perimeter of the United States, you might find the information you are looking for along those lines. I have not googled that in years, but the last time I did I got all kinds of related details and information, including cycling all 48 states
