problem with transamerica gpx file TA02V003?

Has anyone else had problems with the particular gps file for the TransAmerica route: TA02V003?
I could load all but that one into Google Earth, and then I finally discovered that I could convert the files with GPS Visualizer and load it in Google earth that way.

I now I have a Megellan Meridian Platinum with mapsend software. I can convert all the files but TA02V003 from .GPX to mapsend files using GPS Babel. When I try TA02V003 it crashes the program. I've had no luck trying to convert it to other formats first or from other formats.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ben,

I just downloaded it and opened it successfully in OziExplorer, MapSource, G7ToWin, and EasyGPS. I don't have the programs you tried, though. GPX is a rather fluid format, so it is possible that something strange hits just Google Earth and GPS Babel. More likely, though, is a bad download. Have tried repeating that?

The fact that GPS Visualizer likes it argues against a corrupt download, though. Do the programs that fail give any indication of what or where the objectionable input is?

Thanks for the reply. I went back and redownloaded, and am getting the same results. It seems unlikely that one of the files could be corrupt from a zip file that otherwise seems to work.

One interesting thing that I realized is that Google earth is actually using gpsbabel to convert the gpx file when it is opened. So that explains why they both crash. The error mesasge is just the generic windows "gpsbabel has encountered an error and needs to close..." message. I'll keep trying. I leave in a week (gulp!).

Ah, good evidence! That points to a problem with GPSBabel. At least you can work around it by re-writing the TA02V003.GPX with another program to make a flavor that does not choke GPSBabel.

Best wishes for your ride. Please let us know how the GPS  worked. Was it worth the trouble, etc.?

That's what I thought, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do this yet. Can you suggest a program to use to re-write the file? I assume you mean input as gpx and export as gpx and then convert with GPSBabel to MapSend (this is the only software that I have found to export in mapsend format).

Exactly. If you do not already own one of the programs I mentioned above, you can get G7ToWin or EasyGPS for free. I do not know GPS Visualizer that well. Maybe it can write GPX.

I just tried the beta version (1.2. and it worked on the file! So I guess it was a bug that they fixed for the next version.
Now I just have to wade through getting all these waypoints sorted and loaded correctly.
