GPS route-creating and elevation-tracking software
« on: June 18, 2007, 02:08:13 pm »
Hi, I'm new to this forum, so I hope I'm not asking something that's already been covered...

I'm planning a trip from Portland, OR to San Francisco, CA. I was wondering if there is any good software available (preferably free or not too expensive) for creating a route with GPS waypoints, which will also show the elevation across the route.

Other GPS routes that I have seen so far have only shown the elevation at each particular waypoint, rather than a continuous altitude profile -  not very useful for cycling across hilly terrain.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Sloppy,

I do this routinely with Garmin's maps and the MapSource program that comes with them. However, they are not cheap. The City Navigator road maps let you specify the route and load it into a Garmin GPSR. When displayed on the US Topo map on a PC, that route can generate a profile to be viewed or printed.

The new edition of US Topo maps might possibly do both functions, but I do not know. See the prices and contact info at http://www.garmin.com.

Also worth a look are the Delorme maps. Not cheap either, and perhaps someone who owns them will come in with more details.

Mapitpronto provides the ability to gather many elevation points between your waypoints/clicks by checking on the "follow the road" feature.

The routeplanner is where you want to be on the website.  The following url gets you there:

Don't forget to click on the follow the road feature.
