Disc or non-disc brakes

I'm looking into buying my first touring bike and am considering disc brakes, I'm not planning out-of-the-country trips at this time or in the near future. Any opinions? Hydraulic or mechanical?

Just purchased a 2010 Cannondale Ultra Bad Boy, for my son, with hydraulic disc brakes. I have to say I liked it. Very smooth and great stopping power. The one thing that I did notice, when packing it to send it to him was to remove the front wheel, I had to remove the disc brake assembly before I could take the wheel off. This could be an added thing to do when changing a flat tire. However, it wasn't a big deal. Maintenance I am not sure about. I would want to know how to service it, if I were on the road.

you shouldn't have to remove any part of the disc brake to remove the wheel or change the tire, the disc slides right out of the caliper. (the only time that you may have to mess with a caliper is when you have a lefty suspension fork, but thats a mountain bike fork)

You are right, sorry about that, it was a Lefty fork. I did like the hydraulic disc brakes. That's the bike he wanted, it was an interesting setup.
