Place to buy new softer seats?
« on: March 14, 2005, 04:46:36 pm »
I recently have had some back surgery and need to find a softer style seat for my bike.  Any catalogs or suppliers?

Thank You,

Nashbar sells four different gel saddle covers.  This may be a softer seat.  At least it will be squishier.  For $9.95 you can't go too wrong.

Instead of a wide "squishy" seat which will probably interfer with your pedaling, how about mounting your current saddle on a suspension seat post?  That should protect your back without compromising your efficiency nearly as much.

All of the mailorder places, Nashbar included, sell them.

I don't know specifically about backs, but soft saddles can actually cause problems. Do lots of reading before rushing off for something cushy. Check out Adventure Cyclist contributing writer Sheldon Brown's thoughts on the matter at http://www.sheldonbrown.com/saddles.html and http://www.sheldonbrown.com/leather.html. (While some models of leather saddles are hard to break in not all are, such as the Brooks B-17) I advocate a professional bike fit for everyone, but especially anyone with physical problems. Good luck!

Not to presume too much, but you might be surprised at how little
pressure a recumbent puts on your back.  There are loooong
wheelbase versions (Tour Easy, Slipstream, Stratus) and suspended
types (Streetmachine, some of the Burleys), all of which further smooth
out bumps.

If you're positive about remaining on a DF bike, Sheldon Brown is the
place to start, I think.

http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=117&subcategory=1187&brand=&sku=5084&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=   I found a suspension post on WWW.Nashbar.Com, It doesn't cost much and is worth a try.  Thank You
