Butterfly handlebar foam?
« on: April 30, 2005, 11:59:42 pm »
I ordered a butterfly handlebar for my Bontrager MTB
which I use for loading touring from Nashbar. They do not have any foam or really cushioned tape. Does anyone know a good source for the foam? The handlebar is a standard 25.4 size.

You have a couple of options.  Home Centers and hardware stores sell tubular foam in several diameters for insulating pipes. You can use this as a base layer and wrap regular handlebar tape over it.

A second possibility is to wrap two layers of cork or padded cork handlebar tape.  This makes a remarkably resilient bar wrap but is more stable than foam.

I was just at a bike shop and they have foam handlebar grips.  Like the old time Grabber foam from the early 1980s.  The brand was Pyramid Bicycle Accessories.  4 pieces of black foam.  Enough for a drop handlebar bike above and below the brake levers.  $5.99 retail price.  This Pyramid company makes other bicycle accessories.  One I know of is a triangle frame pack.  Your local bike shop may have distributors that handle products from this company.

The store I saw it at is Bike World in Des Moines, Iowa.  Merle Hay Road store.  515-255-7047

I was able to find the Pyramid Foam at a local LBS after visiting 8. I also ordered an extra pack on ebay.
GrabOn also makes a 4 pack of foam meant for road bars.
I am pretty sure the GrabOns will fit my bar too,,, and
since its only 15.00 or so, I ordered a pack of those.
Additionally, I will experiment with various gel pack wraps I have come across.

Thanks for the suggestions!
