Is it worth carrying semi-slick tires for those long stretches of road and
dirt back roads?

Isn't most of the route dirt and seal-coated back roads?  My understanding is that there is not much single track.  I wounder if you could get by with a good touring tire, 26x1.5 or wider for all your riding.  I know that the parts of the route I have done, this type of tire would be workable, but it never rained during my ride.

I used 1-1/2in. inverted tread tires on the whole Great Divide route. They worked great for most of the trip. I did not hit a lot of mud or soft dirt/sand, where they were a disadvantage. I am also a skilled mountain biker, and that helped me ride through the tough spots.

Specialized Crossroads Tires!
The Armadillo versions have tougher sidewalls
The FlatJack version is a bit lighter
Both have the same tread pattern and worked great for the Great Divide last summer

Specialized Armadillo's; awesome, no flats on road tires in over a year. Tioga city slickers on my hardtail mountain commuter....no flats in over two years commuting on city streets of Austin, TX. Tiogas also went over cross country course when it was bone dry on the ground....no problems.  enjoy the voyage....Mark of the Dalton Boys

Personally, I would very strongly recommend the WTB All-Terrainasaurus. I have them on my Trek 930 SHX, and the pair is about 4 years old and still in excellent shape. I've used them on gnarly singletrack with a BoB, and Minneapolis asphalt with medical panniers. They are great tires, and they have given me absolutely no problems (no flats, etc) in all those miles.

I'm gearing up for the Great Divide, too, and will be starting in mid to late August of this year.  I've just ordered some Rhyno-Lite XL rims for the rigid 80's MTB I'll be using for the trip and thought I'd get some Schwalbe Marathon XR's for the tires.  I'm tempted to get the 2.25" versions versus the 1.9" ones for the extra "cushion" they would provide (& they would look cool on my retro "all-rounder") but would like any feedback on using the wider tires.  Will I regret the extra resistance & weight or will I revel in the luxurious comfort as I float along the trail?  Also, has anyone used Planet Bike fenders with tires this big and do they really fit like they say they will?  Thanks.

Continental do a clever tyre called the Traffic, a basic knob tread but has been designed to behave like a road on tarmac, even their Town & Country is also a good tyre to try.
