I am currently using a 44-32-24 XT crank. anyone else using mtn cranks? Brad

I use mountain cranks on my touring bicycle.  The mountain crank allows me to have a gear in the middle teens when combined with a 32 tooth rear cog for a low gear.  I've used that gear a lot while touring - Appalachians for sure.

Use this crank on my "commuter" bike, (no car by choice) and am planning replacing crank on recumbent tadpole trike with something approximately the same. Good overall gearing for touring unless one goes for Rohloff's, Schlumpf's etc. excellent gearing options as well.  Enjoy the Voyage.....Mark of the Dalton Boys

I use a 44 34 22 cluster on my touring/commuting bike (I'm never in the 22 on my commute) because I like having a slightly larger middle ring so I wont have to shift into the big ring on many flat commute during the sections where there may be lights or traffic to stop at.

Oh, I commute and tour on a mountain bike (hardtail).

I've tried a mountain crankset for touring, but it's just too low for me.  I'm near the highest gears on the flats, and I don't use the small ring.  For me, a road triple is a better option.

My two Treks use the 5-arm mtn cranks of the era (mid 90's) that are now referred to as Trekking cranks, 26-36-46. I changed the granny to 24 and big ring to 48, so have 24-36-48. Gives a really nice range with 13-30 (7 spd) in the rear. It will be even better when I go to 8 spd 12-32 eventually, but to do that I need new wheels so I'm holding off for now.
