Building rear wheel tandem hub
« on: August 29, 2006, 01:19:48 pm »
I'm searching the forums looking for advice on building a rear wheel for a regular road bike but use a tandem hub laced to a rim. its a 700 cc tire
The regular bicycle is a lite speed firenza.
I will be pulling a bob yak trailer so I wanted a smooth rollin ride this time.
Please reply with positive information.

Litespeed Firenze has 130mm rear dropout spacing.  Tandem hubs have 140, 145, 160 mm spacing.  Won't fit between the rear dropouts.  You could maybe replace the axle in a 40 or 48 hole tandem hub and get it down to 130mm width.  But 36 spoke rear wheels work fine.

Find a tandem dealer in your area, a bike shop that truely caters exclusively to tandems.  Ask them this question about replacing the long axle in a tandem hub with a 130mm one for your bike.  Or if none are within driving range, then find some on the internet and call them up and ask them to sell you a wheel built around a respaced tandem hub and 40 or 48 hole rim.
