Navigating safely with 2 wheeled trailers?
« on: March 14, 2007, 04:37:43 pm »
Hello,

I'm new to this forum and touring.
I'm interested in two wheeled trailer touring; I have two questions I've not seen addressed previously: How have those who do this do so safely as it seems the trailer would often be in the road?I have an older burley I used for my kids.

Any suggestions for an inexpereinced 2 wheel trailer tourer on packing, altering a burley built for kids for touring, hauling, etc.

Thanks! Hope I'm not inadvertantly repeating Q's

Hi Mike.

I can only address the topic of safety; I have toured with folks pulling 2 wheel trailers, and have pulled my grand-kids in 2 wheel trailers, but have never toured pulling one.

I think a 2-wheel trailer gives you extra visibility. Thus the approaching motorist is forced to take you seriously: that increases your safety.

At the upper right hand corner of your window you will find 'search'. You will probably find it helpful to search on 'trailor' for some quick feedback.

Thanks Paul,

I tried the search and didn't find much... anybody know of any links to those who've used trailers touring that have discussed this in their tour logs?

Appreciate your help,

Mike

P.S. I like the idea of a trailer as I'm already a large person: 275, thought the trailer would give the frame a break...well...
though there's nothing like the looks of a loaded touring bike.

Anybody cut down/modified a child trailer to make it more aero? Got pics/suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

On a tour from Washington state to California, I used a BOB single wheel trailer and my wife used a 2 wheel Burley Nomad. Both worked great. There are advantages to both. I don't think there is a issue with width on a 2 wheel trailer. A 2 wheeler is not much wider than a bike with loaded panniers.
