in Canada: 27" tires | denatured alcohol for stove
« on: May 20, 2007, 06:13:07 pm »
Hello everyone,

I have a very, very old Raleigh touring bicycle. The wheels are 27 inch size. If I do a very long tour in metric Canada (with the chance that a rear tire will wear out), will I easily find 27" tires?

Also, is denatured alcohol easily found in Canada? Where? In paint stores and hardware stores (as it is in the US) ?

Thanks

Check out MEC (Mountain Equpiment Co-op) or Canadian Tire for your denatured alcohol.

You should also be able to find 27" tires at MEC, though I don't know about Canadian Tire.
MEC has locations in most major Canadian cities, (e.g. Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, etc.). www.mec.ca
Canadian Tire is pretty well everywhere.
Bon chance

Hi SP.

I used to have a Myata bike with 27 inch steel rims. It was ruined by an errant motorist about 10 years ago. At that time, I was having trouble finding 27 inch tires, and had to get them mail-order. I'm guessing this is what you have, and tour on a 27 x 1-1/4 tire.

I just did a search at my two favorite Internet bike dealers: between them, they only had 8 27" tires. I'm guessing you will have trouble finding 27" tires at any store in North America (perhaps the world).

If I were you, I would be sure to pack a spare (a folder if you can find one), and know of a place you can order a replacement to be shipped to a future destination.  I haven't seen 27" wheels on a new bike for about 20 years.

I live in the US, but have spent some time in Canada, and I think product selection is about the same as in the US.

Check Wal-Mart for 27" tires.  I seem to recall them having them.  Not the highest quality, but they would work.  I think you have Wal-Marts in Canada.  Go look for the tires NOW.  I would also suspect official bike shops would still have a few 27" tires hanging around.  If you know which towns you will be passing through, CALL up the bike shops in the town NOW and ask them if they have any 27" tires.
