The other shoe

I've a very old touring bicycle, am planning a long tour in Canada this Summer, and wish to ride only on paved roads if route and roads allow that. For my touring bicycle, I just got brand new Shimano pedals, the PD-M324 pedal [see it: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/pedals.html ] which is the SPD type and is the combo kind having a flat platform on one side and cleat lock on the other.

I've not yet decided on what kind of shoe to use but of course I'd like an SPD compatible shoe to wear on my long distance tour. I don't know that I'd want something like the Shimano SH-M121G, an MTB shoe. [See it here: http://tinyurl.com/33z2v9 ]. While I could walk around in that costly shoe, I might want a shoe that looks more like a standard running shoe. The young woman in my LBS told me the other day that I'd be happier in  the Shimano SH-M121G rather than in a heavier, bulkier, maybe not-as-well-ventilated shoe that looks like a running shoe. But I thought I wouldn't want the SH-M121G to wear out from walking around in it and, if I did get it, I could take along some lighter weight, older running shoes for walking.

What are your thoughts and recommendations about this matter of shoe choice?

What shoe do you favor and tell others about? Why do you favor it?

Thanks

Shimano SPD Sandals are probably the most popular touring shoe made.  http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=1218   It's the only shoes nancy and I use, for off and on road touring.

Little if anything compares because they dry very quickly after a rain and in concert with Gore-Tex socks http://www.rei.com/product/729120 , they're suitable for cold and wet days.

Have a great time on your tour!
