When considering any camera, I recommend taking it out into the bright sunlight and see how it works there rather than just in the store. As a touring cyclist, most of your pictures will likely be taken outside. I find some screen displays that seem extremely bright indoors are almost impossible to see outdoors. Because of this, and because of the need to put on my reading glasses to see the screen, I prefer a camera with a regular viewfinder. Such cameras, however, are getting harder and harder to find.

Good topic and good info posted. I want to bring a compact digi cam with wide angle and long zoom. I'm considering the Panasonic TZ5 or 6 vs the Olympus 9000. Any comments?

A good start would be dpreview.com where one spends  a few hours slogging through the objective analyses of the cameras.

Another excellent online resource is http://www.steves-digicams.com/
