Kick Stands
« on: November 08, 2007, 01:35:31 am »
I just bought a new touring bike today.  All I can think about is all the cool and necessary accessories I need to get.
I want to buy a kick stand that can support a loaded bike.
If there is one you really like, let me know and where to buy it.
Thanks

I think a kickstand is a great accessory for loaded touring.

My only advice is that you get a rear-stay mount kickstand - not the more common type that mounts just behind the bottom bracket. These look rather ungainly, but are much more sturdy. If you have oversize tubes, be sure your new stand will accommodate them.

I'm all for them.  I use a double legged type and it works very well when I'm towing my BoB trailer.  However it is one more item you have to keep tight so check often.

Same as Badger my favorite is esge/pletscher double legged. Available at Harris and other places.

Jim Beard did you shorten the legs on your esge?  I saw this on another forum.  I just put mine on and never thought about cutting them down any. thanks JimB

I've seen several touring bikes equipped with the rear-mounted Greenfield kickstand.  While looking for one on the following website:

http://biketrailershop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=113

I saw the suggestion for mounting the kickstand on the BoB trailer.  I tried that on a tour last month and it worked great (best with the front wheel turned to the right).  It was nice not to have to find a 10-foot wall to lean the bike & trailer against or having to lay the bike down along the road when taking breaks in treeless Kansas.

The site also has the double-leg kickstand.

Jim & Drift.

Thanks for your input. I can't use the rear-stay kickstand because my touring bike is a Cannondale with oversize aluminum tubes.

I've never seen one of the double legged kickstands - have only seen them on the Internet. I don't understand how they work. Do both legs go down/up with a single kick, or do you need to kick down the left side, then walk around the bike and kick down the right side?

Two folks I recently toured with had the Greenfield rear-stay set-up an d I was very envious.

JimB- Yes i did shorten the legs on my ESGE.
There are markers on both legs . I read where someone cut legs too short so i cut and checked then cut again.
Be careful to keep both sides the same .

PTalyor?"Do both legs go down/up with a single kick, or do you need to kick down the left side ".
ANS.Pick up on seat or whatever so stand is clear from ground ,kick back on left leg, both legs move up under left chain stay with a single kick just like a normal kickstand.
:confuse:Then say how the hell did it do that. :)
Here is picture of one folded  on craigslist if it is still up no pun intended.

Thanks for your input. I can't use the rear-stay kickstand because my touring bike is a Cannondale with oversize aluminum tubes.
I think you will find that Cannondale recommends using the kickstands that mount to the rear triangle, not behind the bottom bracket. It is getting hard to find decent quality kickstands that work wtih the big tubes of the Cannndale, but they do still exist.
I have contacted Cannondale about putting a kickstand on behind the BB, and they said not too. Personally, I think that it looks like a pretty sturdy bridge between the chaninstays that looks like it was made for a kickstand.

Bikerjames -My ESGE is mounted on a 1998 Cannondale   T1000 .
What reason does Cannondale give for discouraging the use of behind bottom bracket kickstand ?
I can see how overtightening could damage the tubing .

The rear stay kickstand is best. The bridge style can cause frame damage.

I am aware that conventional wisdom says you have to use the rear stay mounterd kickstand, but I am wondering if a kickstand can safely be mounted to the "bridge" between the chainstays, as it seems to be sturdy, and looks like it was built for a kickstand.
