wich burner?

I'm planning a cycletrip in the VS for this year. Colorado, Utah, Arizona and California. I was wondering wich burner is the best to take with me? If I take my Patrol-burner with me, there is a change that it will be taken at the douane. I have a meths- burner but is Methylated spirit available in the VS. And where can I buy it? The last option is a Gas-burner.

Hi Jet. Welcome to the forum.

There are four types of fuel commonly used by bicycle tourists. White Gas, Propane, Butane, and Alcohol.

I'm guessing that what you are calling Methylated Spirit would be called Alcohol in the US. I'm also guessing that your Patrol, would be White Gas in the US.

I personally have only used White Gas stoves, and the fuel is widely available all over the US. The only downside, is that you usually have to buy it in full gallon cans. I do not think you would be allowed to fly an airplane with any of these fuels in your possession.

I have heard stories of liquid fuel type stoves being confiscated at the airport if there was any residual fuel or the smell of fuel in the tank.

Definitely don't try to fly with any type of fuel.

Alcohol, butane, kerosene, propane, and white gas (Coleman fuel) are all widely available in the western US.

To sort out the fuel names in various countries check out the following site:

Purchase an MSR Pocket Rocket or a Snowpeak propane stove at an outfitter that caters to backpackers. They both use canisters that are reasonably available. Buy the fuel when you get here and leave the remainder with someone when you leave. Both stoves weigh just a few ounces.

The new MSR Reactor (a JetBoil like stove) supposedly is the most fuel-efficient canister stove available today. The JetBoil though is no slouch either so if you want to take into account fuel and fuel usage, consider the larger Reactor which includes the boiling pot, and assuming you just need to boil water.

I know that it is not allowed to take anny fuels in the airplane. But you can smell the fuell in my fuel-stove even when it's is empty. So i'm affraid that they will take it out of my bagage. It happens before in Europe.
Yes, alcohol is the same as Methylated spirit. Where can I buy it? Just in the supermarket or somewhere else?

Alcohol (either denatured Ethanol or methanol) can be purchased at hardware stores and home centers like Home Depot or Lowes.  These are widely available in the US.
