Both panniers AND trailer at the same time?

 I've seen a lot of panniers VS. trailers, but why not both? Has anyone tried this?

Has anyone tried this? I'd like to do a bit of touring with a much weaker rider. If I could carry most/all of the equipment, then we could travel a bit faster and more safely.

We would be traveling on roads, so bumps are less of a problem. I'm 180 lbs on a stock Novara Randonee--are there going to be problems with my rear wheel in such a setup?

If you know of any photos/anecdotes on the interwebs of such a setup, please let me know.

I think perhaps lowrider fronts and a trailer would make some sense. I've read blogs of some folks who have toured with both.

Those guys are really into long trips and use full sets of panniers, front and rear, and trailers.

I have both, use both, but usually use panniers. I suppose if the trip were long enough, I would do like Andreas and Waltraud and use both at the same time.

IMportant in any case: do not stuff your luggage full when you set off.
Leave lots of room for stuff you will pick up along the way.

my husband and i toured australia with a full set of panniers each, and traded off on the BOB, which we mostly used for the bulky stuff: tent, mats and sleeping bags. it made packing panniers much easier. it may be overkill, but for us, bush camping 7 months straight, it simplified things. the BOB can be turned over for use as a table with two camp stools(which also fit in the BOB bag).

Check out Kool Stop trailers http://www.koolstop.com/trailers/index.php.  I have the Kool Mule, which I use mostly for grocery store runs.  I took it down the Oregon coast last summer.  It can carry a lot more weight than I can pull all day long.  Look at the Kool Wilderbeast.  It is kind of a BOB with panniers.

The folks at Kool are very friendly and helpful in answering questions and getting you spare parts.

I use both front panniers with low-rider racks and a BOB trailer. I do this, not for being able to carry more stuff, but to put a little more weight on the front wheel--it seems to hold the front down better on steep climbs.  The real advantage is being able to pack the BOB  bag in the morning and not digging into the rest of the day.  Stuff I need during the day, like lunch, tools, water filter, rain gear, etc., goes in the panniers for easy access.

I normally tour with front and rear panniers.

I have also used a BOB in addition to the panniers when I want to take along some camera equipment.

When my wife rides with me, she is not heavily loaded.  That is, she carries about 40 pounds of stuff in her panniers.  We load bulky stuff in the BOB and then attach it to her bike (we have BOB Nutz on both bikes).  

My wife hardly knows that she is pulling the BOB.
