Long-shot handlebar bag question
« on: July 16, 2008, 11:02:28 am »
Nearly 20 years ago I did a lot of touring and dragged along bags made by Madden.  I still have the bags and have started commuting by bike and would like to use the handlebar bag, but I've long since lost the rack-thingummy (I'm sure there's a real term for it!) that hooked over my handlebars to attach the bag.  Madden apparently no longer exists, but does anyone here know if another company makes a model that uses a similar attachment system (and this would require that someone here is familiar with the Madden bags--I can't even remember what the attachment piece looks like), or perhaps someone has an old bag and could post a link to a photo and I could make my own rack with heavy gauge wire?

Thanks!

Sarah

Don't own the part or packs but I have bought old parts several times on eBay.  Just have a daily search sent to you for when/if it appears.

I have a full set of old Kirkland Tourpaks (30 years old) and I still see them occassionally for sale on eBay.  Good luck!

Happy trails and may the wind be at your back!

I have an old cannondale bar bag that uses the same sort of wire rack, I don't know how easy it would be to make one from a picture, but email me a onedollatmiyata at yahoo.com and I will try to send pictures.

the bag is cool and retro on my old Motobecane that I ride every now and again, but newer bar bags are a big improvement over the coathanger variety.  I use modern bar bags on my regular riders.  even a cheap one from nashbar is better, has a quick release, less sag and sway that affects handling.  this from a retro grouch says a lot.

I don't remember if it's a madden unit but I have at least one probably two that I'd be willing to send you for the joy of putting it to good use.
