Special bar ends needed/wanted
« on: November 15, 2008, 01:14:30 pm »
I just bought a new bike. It came with Ergo (handlebar grips) that extend all the way to the end of the handlebar, really nice and comfortable. I would like to get bar ends for the bike to help with hill climbs and more hand positions for my long bike rides.
I'd like to get bar ends that secure from inside of the handlebars, not the outside (like most do). I rather not have to cut the ergo hand grips- they are not made to be cut, so I would need a different type of bar end or I'll have to replace the hand grips. Does anyone know the name/where to buy/ or if they even exist?

Not exactly sure what you're after, but if it is along the lines of thumb shifters (bar ends moved to anywhere on the bar), take a look at http://www.paulcomp.com

Thanks for your help Jim.
What I am looking for is more like this.
http://www.bikepro.com/products/barends/barends_answer.html

This bar end has a component that sticks inside the handlebar then tightens. Unfortunately, this model also closes around the outside (as well as the inside) of the bar. I'd like to find something that just tightens to the inside of the handlebar so I dont have to take off/ change the ergo grips that came with the bike.

I'm sure what you're looking for would split the bar open if it were to grip the bar tightly enough from the inside alone.  It works ok for bar-end shifters because they don't have to handle nearly as much force.

you can probably slide the brake levers, then shifters, then grips, inward 1/2 an inch or so to expose the ends of the handle bars to be able to attach standard bar ends

Thanks for the info DJ. I found some literature on what you stated to do and tried it. It worked like a charm. Can't believe I didn't think of sliding everything over.
Thanks...Happy cycling!
