commuting by bike
« Reply #60 on: October 10, 2016, 09:48:42 pm »
I'm semi-retired now. My new part-time job at a local college has me driving around campus every day. One day we ran out of cars. The boss said "do you bike? because that's all we have left".
Now I bike around campus for my job. My boss even bought 2 new bikes because I showed I was serious about riding every day. I do not commute enough days in to work because I like to sleep late.

If you drive at work see if your boss will let you bike instead.

Yes, bike commuting is the antidote to coffee.  I am currently on a 4/week run here in NYC.  I logged about 200 miles in October for the commute rides, about 13 miles/day from Brooklyn.  Start by 7:30 AM to avoid congestion; look out for evening road ragers; obey signs and get the blinky lights!  Also, thank you/watch out for CitiBikes!

Yes, bike commuting is the antidote to coffee...

I love coffee and take it along on my commute.  I found a good insulated travel mug that fits in a water bottle cage (Contigo Aria).  You can also buy ring-shaped holders that can carry many common travel mugs.

haha. We've kept this thread going for 9 friggin years.

Just wanted to share that I've started riding my bike to the coffee shop 10 miles up the road. I'll sit and work from the laptop for 4 hours and then bug out and bike home before their lunch rush starts.

I've got to watch the heat right now on the way home, but it is a pretty painless way for me to get my mileage in.

Plus the riding helps me recharge the creative juices in the brain.

Not sure if it is the antidote to coffee, but it sure enhances it.

Riding to the coffee shop, or to the local brewpub to refill your growler, are both worthwhile.

I'm fortunate enough to have a 4 mile round trip commute in great weather, so 5 days a week

I recently changed job and I decided to commute 10 miles to/from work. With winter coming up, I foresee that most of my commute will be in the dark and I'm looking out for reliable lights.

Did some research last night and was pretty impressed with the Light & Motion 900. I'd love to hear your experience with this light if you're currently using one. Or are there other models I should look at too?

If your ride involves trails or multi use paths, I caution against use of extremely bright headlights.  On a path, they blind oncoming cyclists.  If the light is EU compliant and has a "cutoff" pattern, not so bad.  Also not so bad if you mount it on your helmet and you remember to turn your head and aim it away from the oncoming riders.  The very bright lights are not a problem on streets, where you aren't so close.

I've been commuting into work as well as riding at work this semester. I'm in a newly refurbished bldg.  Now we have a shower in the locker room. That really made my mind up to commute to work. Feeling refreshed after biking in really helped to motivate me to commute. Only 3.1 miles each way.
