Looking for America

My wife and I just completed a ride from Astoria, Oregon to Boston, Mass.  We used ACA maps (Lewis and Clark and Northern Tier) plus some of our own.  We had a grand time and if anyone out there has any questions, I would be glad to respond.-EC

No questions. Just a warm "Good going!" A summer on the Northern Tier is a summer well spent.

Did you happen to cross North Dakota on the Northern Tier on the central/eastern half?  If so, were the grasshoppers as bad as when I was there years ago??  They were everywhere and would jump on my legs and cling to the little hairs and would spook the bejeebers (what exactly is a bejeeber anyway :) ??) out of me as I rode along.

Glad to hear you had a wonderful time.

Happy trails and may the wind be at your back!

Before we left on our trip, a friend at work asked me two questions about our tour- the first was, "Will you have some sort of refrigeration unit to keep your food cold?" ...and a few days later, "What do you plan to do about the locusts?" (I hadn't considered locusts).  So, when we were riding through North Dakota we would yell at each other, "Locusts! Quick, turn on the refrigeration units!"  (Locusts hate that)

My wife and I are planning a similar route to that you took.  We plan to leave Astoria in late June and head to Portland, through the Columbia River Gorge on the Lewis and Clark route.  Just east of Hood River, Oregon, we plan to cut northeast across eastern Washington and pick up the Northern Tier route at the Washington and Idaho border just before Sandpoint, Idaho.  We are doing the trip without camping gear (all hotels/motels) requiring that we find towns with motels.  I think I have a route more or less figured out, but am curious if you took a similar route and have and suggestions for towns to stay in or places we should not miss.
