Trinidad-Eureka, CA Bypass

I see a lot of cycle tourists struggling with the traffic on Hwy 101 between Arcata and Eureka, and who knows what suffering they endure in Eureka.

I have created a "resource" at Crazyguyonabike.com that has a textual explanation on how to avoid Hwy 101 from Trinidad through Eureka.  It includes photos and maps.  I can't use HTML, or I'd post the URL for this information.  Just go to the site and look for my name, "Steve Fox," and you will find the "resource" I mention.

Tip for the map folks at Adventure Cycling:  You should consider using my route instead of your current directions, which take folks into Arcata and then loose them on the busy freeway to and through Eureka.

Thanks for the info. It looks very useful.

You can put URLs here via pseudo-HTML generated with the icon below the message composition box that looks--strangely enough--like the Internet Explorer icon. After seeing what it generates, I find it faster to type the pseudo-HTML.

The mapping folks are always happy to receive good local knowledge. I have made a few contributions in NY and VT. They probably read this forum, but a note to them at routes-maps@adventurecycling.org would make sure.

As for the topic icons, your guess is as good as anyone's, AFAIK.

In January, 2006, we published new routing between Arcata and south of
Eureka to avoid US 101. Before that we already had avoided almost all of
101 between Trinidad and Arcata. So it's possible the cyclists you see on
101 aren't using our maps, or have an older version. The new routing
appears on map #BC-1621 06L.
