Getting to Amela Island FL from Jacksonville
« on: July 10, 2007, 10:50:17 am »
I previously posted this in the "Routes" forum and got no replies, so I thought I'd try here.

I plan to bike the east coast of Florida next spring (late April to early May). I will take a train or plane to Jacksonville and bike to Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island to start. Does anyone have any advice on routes from the Amtrak station or airport to Amelia Island? From Amtrak, the logical (but not shortest) route seems to be northwest on US 1 to A1A at Callahan, then east. From the airport, US 17 north to AIA. But I'd like to know if there are other non-main roads that are safe and don't traverse bad areas.
Thanks.

Presumably the Amtrak station is downtown. You ought to be able to get on US17 and head up to 105 and then east. From the airport you also will be near 17.  Go east to 17, north to A1A or south to 105 then east.

I've been past Jacksonville on the coast a couple of times but you need local knowledge to learn about the city itself. You might call a bike shop in the city.

US17 is a fairly good bicycling road all the way up through Georgia to near Savannah.
