camp food and ideas for eating better
« on: September 17, 2007, 03:22:20 am »
I tried to eat one restaurant type meal a day when I was on my first ride. Usually it was second breakfast because it was cheap and that way I could talk to some local area people easily. I do not like to cook in camp using the freeze dried stuff because I don't think it tastes that good and it is pricy as hell. I do like to do the supermarket roasted checken and bag of salad (beer of course) pretty regularly. I also throw salmon in tin foil with seasoning into the fire pit (also one with sliced potatoes, onions and olive oil) then make a fire, put on coffee and boil a can of green beans. Fire dies down, I have the salmon and beans for dinner. I sometimes add  a little dark rum and cocoa to the coffee for a coffee nudge dessert and call it good.

What other (good and easy) camp food and ideas for better eating have you had success with? I'm omnivorous, but a good touring buddy is vegetarian (eats seafood)so vegies and tofu stuff is welcomed.

Here is a good one for a camp fire. Chop up celery, garlic, and onion. Mix it together with lean hamburber meat, salt and pepper. Wrap it tightly in aluminum foil. Put it in the red hot coals. It tastes great.

Here is a good breakfast. It requires boiling water. Mix together oatmeal and raisins. Pour in the boiling water to form a paste, not a flowing liquid. Slice a banana or two into the mix. Pour a liberal dose of yogurt over the whole. Squeeze a couple or three or four lemons, and mix it with a juice for your vitamin C.

Here is an energy food. Bagel with peanut butter, banana, and whipped honey. I ate these sandwiches on the PCBR.

visit any used bookstore and look for the series called "Roughing It Easy."
any backpacking recipe book will help change your whole routine.

There are two food issues most self-contained bikers discuss here often: boredom and ease of preparation. It's not difficult to eat well without any cooking. It's not difficult to get your 2k-3k calories and never eat the same thing twice. it jsut takes imagination and some advice from experienced trail and roadside chefs.

One word-stew. All grocery stores have potatoes, veggies and if you chose sausage, chicken or beef. Easy to cut up, easy to cook quickly and everything a growing bike tourist needs. I carry a two day emergency supply of rice and that is about all. I rarely eat in a cafe for a main meal, occasionally brunch.
