west Glacier - hwy 2 stinks?
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:45:39 pm »
I've heard that Highway 2 coming out of West Glacier National Park is an RV-infested, narrow, horrible road.

I've heard there's an alternate route.  What is it?  I'm trying to get back to the GDMBR, probably in Whitefish MT.

Thanks!

Hi Sandlizard -

I rode out of West Glacier last summer (mid-June) on my way to Whitefish.  Hwy 2 does have traffic and there is a short amount of the hwy where the shoulder is not very good or wide.  For the most part though, it was not bad for my group of 4 (with trailers and panniers).

No good alternative that I am aware of.

Good Luck.

Get the ACA Map "Northern Tier Section 2". Panels 23 & 24 will get you from West Glacier to Whitefish with only a short stretch (in Columbia Falls) on US 2. Part of the route is gravel, which I'm sure you wont mind since you're doing the Great Divide.

I rode that route in 2006, and don't recall that traffic was a problem.
