How do you like the new forum?

I like it! Fast and does not stall. John Sieber, was it you who chose and installed the SMF software? Good going. I expect it saves you a deal of grief.

Members: this forum has many more options and features than we are used to. If it seems bewildering, give yourself a couple of days to get familiar with navigating it.

Hi Fred,
I did choose the SMF software to replace the old cfforum software that the forum was running on since its beginning. I've been wanting to move the forums over to this software for a long time so it was nice that the time became available to get it done. I'm hoping that the new features and better performance will help to grow the community and make this an even better resource of information on bicycle travel.

There are a lot of new features so if anyone has questions or thoughts this thread is a good place for them. I'll try to keep an eye on it and answer what I can. Sorry that it took so long to get this done.

Hi Jim,
There are two ways that you can add a image to a message on the forum. One way is preferred over the other but both options are available. The first way is what you mentioned above. Images can be uploaded from your computer as attachments to the thread and displayed that way. This is a less preferable as we have a limited amount of storage space on the server so we need to limit the size and type of attachments.

The other option is to link to an image already hosted on the internet. There are a number of photo sites where you can place images to then link to on the internet or you can use your own personal web space that often comes with an internet account. Once the image is on the internet somewhere you can add it to the thread. An example would be if I wanted to show the current Photo of the Week from the Adventure Cycling website I would do the following:
1. Bring up the desired image in your web browser.
2. Right click, or control click on the mac, on the image and choose properties. Look for the url or location. For this example it is http://www.adventurecycling.org/weeklyphoto/595.jpg
3. In the message that you are composing look for the insert image icon. It is the second on the second row and if you hover over it a tooltip will appear that says, "Insert image".
4. Enter the url into the dialog and press ok.

The image should appear.

It seems to be exactly the same as the previous forum.  How is it any different?  The light blue text is slightly harder to read and it takes a little longer to log on to post a message. ::)

The content is the same as the old forum as it was all converted over to run in the new software. The old software often locked up and cause errors as well as slowed down the entire adventure cycling website. The old forum software was nine years old and no longer developed and impossible to get support for. The search feature rarely worked and we received a lot of complaints about the forum in general.

The new software is current and well developed. It is a full featured and I hope will provide a better experience for everyone using it. Sorry that your initial impressions were not good but I hope that they change over time.

Instead of starting a new thread each time I think of a new feature that is worth mentioning I figure that this thread is as good as any place to discuss the new features. We have had requests in the past for the ability to view the forums from a news reader or live bookmarks. This is now possible by using the following link to feed your news reader or create your live bookmarks:
http://www.adventurecycling.org/forums/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml

Creating a Live Bookmark in Firefox is a great way to easily see the most recent posts on the forum.

Does this mean a real NNTP newsreader, John? I would love to read with Outlook Express, leaving all the HTTP eye candy behind. Do we have an NNTP server now? Or should I get an add-in for OE that converts RSS to NNTP?

I'm liking it. The old one used to time me out after a few minutes of writing a post. This one even remembers me when I return.
