Cell phone coverage on Southern Tier

Planning to do southern tier can anyone tell which company has he best cell phone coverage for this route please.  And any hint as to the best cell phone/blackberry/i phone/etc for use on a trip like this which will give me internet conections.

 We just finished the ST in November. We used Verizonwireless broadband for the laptop and  for the cell phones. Surprising to us the only area we couldn't get service was parts of Texas near Sanderson. We had internet connection close to 90% of the time, never having to use the motel's internet.
