Partial RSS feed
« on: January 31, 2009, 07:34:03 am »
The RSS feed shows only about half of the new posts every day here, using Firefox 3.0.5. Maybe operator error by this RSS newbie.

I look at the list of topics containing new posts from RSS, then go to the web site and see many more. How is it working for you?

Thanks,

Fred

Hi Fred,
It looks like the default rss link just shows the most recent 5 posts. I did a little searching and found this thread on the simplemachines forum that has a breakdown of the different options you can use. Hope this helps.

RSS is an acronym for--among other things--Really Simple Syndication. That does not help at all, does it? This is a method for a web site to send any new information, new posts in the present case, to your computer without you having to go to the web site to check. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format) tells more.

In Firefox, look for the RSS icon, orange with three curved white lines, at the right end of the address line. IE 7 has a similar icon near its Home icon. These indicate that RSS is available for the address. Click on the icon to subscribe to the feed. Read Help in your browser to see how to display the posts as they arrive. Some email programs, but not Outlook Express, can also display RSS feeds.

RSS for this forum can show the most recent N posts, where 5 <= N <= 255. Unfortunately, it cannot show just the new posts since you last signed on.

Thank you, John. I thought I must have been missing something. I will try some add-ins for OE to use the RSS feed, hoping that OE will filter out the messages already read. This is not a high-priority project, but will stay warm on the back burner for a few days.
