panniers and a trailer
« on: December 07, 2008, 07:13:17 pm »
i posted the same thing in gear talk section but im not getting many views so ill post here to. i was recently looking at nashbar panniers online and am curious about them. i need a pannier that will give me enough clearance from the axle so i can hook a trailer to the bike while the panniers are on it(specificly the burley nomad) are nashbar panniers worth the money? how long do they last? and also, is there another pannier that would give me as much clearance from the axle as the nashbar?

hey there robert
i have a pair of axiom panniers and they clear the axel just fine...they
are not huge, but i'm assuming since you will be totting a trailer of
sometype you won't need to be carrying tons of gear in them(?
)...they've worked great for me when I did the TransAm, blue ridge
parkway, and several smaller trips.  kept my gear dry during torrential
downpours too and the material held up great when I wiped out and
skidded across the road coming down lolo pass.  so i def recommend
checking out a pair, plus they ain't too pricey.

Which Nashbar Panniers?  If you are thinking of the waterproof rear panniers you should be fine unless you have a lower rack than the Blackburn EX-1.

Between the three of us we used two sets of rear Nashbar Waterproof, two sets of front Nashbar Waterproof, One set of Performance Transit Epic, and one set of Nashbar MTB.  All held up fine for our TA tour and I would definitely buy the Nashbar Waterproof again.  I wasn't crazy about the MTB ones but my partners liked the pockets.

Edit: I forgot to say that all of the panniers that I mentioned clear the axle fine.

Robert,
I cannot coment on your Burley Nomad.I have a Cannadale T800 which I used on TranAm.I used axiom Racks on the Front and Arkel Panners, plus Bob trailer.I had to cut a piece of the rear racks to get the Bob on.It was quite easy and I had no Problems.Arkel panners have rain covers and I kept them on for most of my Trip.Safety Precausion, and they are Yellow.Good Luck on your Trip and be safe................

Try Ebay they often have good deal on Axiom panniers.  One of the pluses for Axiom is easy to find replacement parts.
