Lodging in Bar Harbor

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to stay a few days in Bar Harbor?

I stayed for a couple of nights at the hostel.  I went cheap and opted for a tent platform in the back.  That's a bit noisy because the hostel is right next to an all night gas station, so bring good earplugs.  I recommend the silicone type.  I hate dorm style accommodations more, so this was preferable.  I don't know if they offer private rooms.

So this isn't much of a recommendation, but you'll know what to expect at the hostel.  Oh, they do have lock-out during the day, so be up on that!

Are you going for the Norther Tier?  The New England stretch is fantastic!

Cheers,

Scott

Thanks for the reply. We are going the Northern Tier with a detour through Ontario into Michigan.

I don't really know much about Bar Harbor. I have been there only once. I did not even spend the night. I was cycling the New England states. I decided to go out to Bar harbor simply because I knew it to be the eastern terminus of the  Bikecentennial route/northern tier. It looked to me to be touristy. They have a ferry that goes to Nova Scotia. There appeared to be quite a few restaurants. Google around. I am sure you will not have a problem finding a place. I cannot make any recommendations though.

I live in the Detroit area.  How are you planning to come in to Michigan?  Where are you planning to ride once you get into Michigan?

Probably come into Michigan at Port Huron and ride up to Petoskey and on into the UP or maybe back down to Ludington and ferry across.

I have ridden into Ontario from Michigan a couple of times.  I have used the ferry crossings from Algonac (Michigan) to Walpole Island (Ontario), and Marine City (Michigan) to Sombra (Ontario).  Both are bike friendly, and these would be my recommendation.

I can't speak for the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.  I have ridden under it.  I doubt they would let you ride across, and I just don't know if there is a shuttle service for bikes.  There is a shuttle service for the Mackinaw Bridge if you decide to continue on to the UP.  You could also take the ferry from Mackinaw City to Mackinaw Island (go sight seeing, buy fudge), and then take a different ferry from Mackinaw Island to St Ignace.

Register at warmshowers.org.  This is a worldwide website of families that host touring cyclists in their homes.  Once you register to be a host, you can access any family you want to stay with across the USA or world while you cycle.  I just checked and there is a family in Ellsworth, ME which is the entrance to Bar Harbor.  I've stayed with many host families over the past years while cycling North America.  All have been wonderful experiences!    GROUNDHOG
