« on: June 03, 2009, 03:15:53 pm »
Hi,

I am planing to ride the Kettle Valley Trail and Great Divide this summer and own a Garmin Vista HCx. Would map would you recommend for that region? I am riding the Great Divide down to Denver. Do you know of a Garmin Card which covers the whole area?

thanks

The only map where the Kettle Valley trail would "show up" is the Canada Topo map, and it will only be indicated as an abandoned railway, meaning you won't be able to do any routing functions and it will only serve to show you where you are (no ETA calculations, etc.)

And in the U.S., the US Topo does the same job. City Navigator would permit turn-by-turn navigation on the few places where the route follows roads, but that's not many. Combined with the ACA waypoints, the two topo map sets will do fine as an adjunct to the ACA maps. GPS by itself is not enough.

Also, check out Scott's GPS Data link at http://www.topofusion.com/divide/

Do you have a recommendation for where to get a map for the route? I can then transfer that manually onto the GPS.

Do you mean electronic maps? The aforementioned Garmin maps come with a program called MapSource that loads them into a Garmin GPSR. If yours is a different brand, check the vendor's web site for equivalent coverage. Load Scott's GPS tracks and you have the route on your screen.

Or do you mean paper maps? The best in the world are Adventure Cycling's maps, kept current and showing what cyclists most need to see.

Nope, we haven't mapped the Kettle Valley Trail. However, Chuck Haney wrote an article on his experience riding it. If you search for BC Ballast on our Publications Archive page you can download a pdf of it.

Hope that helps,
