Just bought a Garmin Edge 705

Greetings everyone,
After reading all the great info here at ACA I did it.  I just ordered a new Garmin Edge 705 with Speed/Cadence.  I got it without the loaded SD card and will order the maps on DVD so that I can put them on my PC.
Just wanted to tell anyone that might be wanting to buy one of these or any other computer/GPS that, Colorado Cyclist has 20% off all orders over $100.  The sale ends and midnight Sunday Feb. 1st. So, if you are in the market, now is the time to save over $100.  That means that I'll basically get the DVD of maps and a memory card for free.  All I have to do now is wait for the Fed Ex guy/gal and then figure out how to use the thing.

Thanks for all the great info here and on all the forums.  Hopefully I can add some good info as I learn the Garmin,

I have the 705 with the (micro)sd card which has all the maps of North America.  What's the advantage of having that info on a DVD/PC instead of loaded on the 705?

FYI, MEC of Canada offers this at $433.19. Not sure what comes with it, but I do believe they will ship to the U.S.

I think if you use the search box while viewing a specific thread it just searches that thread. Try the search from the forum index or from the main search page. http://www.adventurecycling.org/forums/index.php?action=search

Yes, that must be the difference. I ran the search while the GPS Discussion index page was visible and found 14 threads, several of which have more that one message about the Edge.

For me, this is better for two reasons:
1. The DVDs are easier to create routes with
2. The free SD slot allows for more flexibility and additional maps

The DVDs are loaded on the computer with MapSource program. With a large computer monitor, mouse, and keyboard, I can easily and quickly navigate maps, view regions, and create routes.

Meanwhile, I have a 4GB microSD card in the Edge 705. The entire North America is less than 2GB. So I can load the entire map library and still have 2GB leftover.

This gives me flexibility to load other maps on the same unit as well. For me, I have the topo maps loaded as well.

When I visit Europe, I load the maps as well.

I think it is a far superior option.

I have the West Coast and Hawaii Topo maps the came on a microSD card and I also have US Topo 24K maps that came on a DVD. Can they be combined on a 4GB microSD card? If they can't be combined, how do I load the DVD on to a microSD card?

Where can I find answers on how to install the additional maps. I am having a tough time figuring out the documentation.

Yes, you can combine maps from several Garmin map products on one memory card. Install all the map products on your PC.

Start the MapSource program and open a file, either a new one or an existing one. Select one of the map products from the drop-down list. Use the Map tool to select the maps you want.

Select another map product and the maps you want from it. Repeat until done.

Now you can transfer all the maps to your card. It will take a long time. I do not know the maximum size that MapSource can handle, but you may find out. <grin> Please let us know.

You could import different maps to your Garmin with SAS.Planet. For example Google Maps, Street views, Mountain trails

I was able to use SAS.Planet to import Google maps to Oziexplorer, but not to Garmin.

If I choose extension .map I can use the maps produced by SAS.Planet with Oziexplorer. But what should I do to produce maps for Garmin?

To get detailed street maps, you will need to buy an optional map of North America on SD card ($99) or buy the $650 version of the 705 (there are three versions of the 705) that comes with the map, heart rate monitor, and cadence monitor. See more detail on versions on page two.

I like my new Garmin Edge 705, I'm biking since 2008 and is the first time that I know my rate heart, and I can honestly say I don't think I could live without it now.
