General GPS How To Sticky?
« on: February 13, 2009, 06:08:29 pm »
While I don't see it, is there a general, basic primer on GPS on here?  I have found lots of stuff but it is getting me confused again.  If not, perhaps someone could put something together??  Thanks!

Hi John,

This forum does not have one, but there are several in the broader GPS community. My favorite portal to that community is http://gpsinformation.net/. Of particular interest to us are the Tutorial tab and the first three feature articles. The best receivers for long distance cycling combine the light weight and waterproof rating of the hiking units with the large map capacity and turn-by-turn routing of the automobile units.

Look there for links to everything about consumer GPS: FAQs, reviews, techniques, accuracy, etc.

Allow plenty of time. <grin>

A "sticky" thread for general gps information pertaining to cycling would be a great item to have. If we have a volunteer interested in putting one together I can assist in getting it set as a "sticky" topic.

Take a look at
http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=3Tzut&page_id=67598&v=4D

A primer on GPS for cyclists. Be patient. The sophistication of these newer units (Fred referenced) requires same. Good journey.

A good point, John. The information that a curious cyclist needs is all out there on the web, but scattered. A sticky thread might collect it, or links to it, but would lack the organization that a newcomer needs to get into the topic.

Doing it right would take more space than a thread would comfortably handle. How about an article on the GPS Information page of the ACA web site? I will even suggest an author. Paul Taylor has written well on this topic at http://paulltaylor-gps.blogspot.com/, itself a good start on a primer.

Paul, are you there? Would you be interested?

Fred,

Thanks for this link.  Wonderful, with pictures to boot.

Reading your recent posts.  Cool.

But I do not know how to post this reply, using the correct method.
