Nevada route info.

I'm researching a tour for this coming summer that will involve a section of Hwy 50 from Silver Springs to Middlegate.  On looking at Google Maps, I discovered a set of roughly parallel roads from Lohatan Res. : Cadet Rd. and Pioneer Way, among others.  Does anyone know the road surface on these?  In short, is it possible to ride  good dirt, preferably pavement between the reservoir and Fallon without getting on Hwy 50?  Contrary to marketing claims, that hwy is NOT especially lonely on that stretch.

I would expect those roads to be dirt, and the aerial views seem to confirm that.  My expereince with dirt roads in Nevada is that they are usually quite passable, but expect some sections of deep sand that it's best to ride around if possible.  The sand sections are usually in low spots and can be easily identified once you know what to look for.  Wide tires will be your friend.

Hey, Sean:  Yeah, looking at the photos seems to reveal dirt, but looks like some pavement, too.  I run 1.5 in. rubber, little tread.  We'll see!

Scott, What you are seeing are parts of the old Highway 50. It runs along the highway on both the north and south side. It is passable in some spots and very sandy and rough in others. It is also heavily used by off-highway vehicles. It also continues once you leave Fallon and follows the highway out past sand mountain recreaction area and through to Middlegate junction.This section has alot of paved portions remaining.  I think it is also part of the old pony express trail, I have seen articles refering to this. I have not ridden a bicycle on it, but I travel this section of highway 50 often in a car and see alot of motorcyles, buggies and atv's using this trail at high rates of speed. Hope this helps, I too am looking to tour this section of Nevada in the future, so I am always looking for away to stay off of Hwy 50 as well.

Thanks, Mike.  I guess it makes sense that a lot of it would be dirt/sand.  I suppose we'll end up on Hwy 50 and just deal.  Once we hit Middlegate, we head south towards Gabbs, very remote and quiet out there.  In general, with the exception of Hwy 95, the north south routes in Nevada are the true "lonely" highways.
