Hello Rod, I saw your note offering advice on bike touring in SE Asia. It has been a very long time since you posted, but I'm hoping you are still available to help me out. My husband and I are planning a month of cycling. We spent a month in the north of Thailand and Laos in January of this year and loved it. We started in Chiang Mai and went north to the Burma border, crossed into Laos and wound up in Vientiane. We took boats in a few places, so our total biking was less than 1000km. We loved the smiles, the insight into culture and the daily life of the people.
Now we are planning on spending some time in Burma. It seems difficult to travel there with the restrictions on where one can go and where one can stay, so we have signed up for a tour, although our preference in the past has always been to travel on our own. For the rest of our month, we though we would sample another country, either Cambodia (Angkor Wat!) or Vietnam. We have stury road bikes (no suspension) that can handle dirt roads, but we don't want to be on single track or extremely poor terrain if we can avoid it. We would also like to avoid heavy traffic with heavy pollution. Do you have any advice on a route of perhaps 400-500km (or more if there are boats or trains that are reasonably comfortable).
