Experience of roads on Black Hills tour?
« on: January 21, 2020, 11:47:46 am »
My family is considering a 4-5 day bike tour in the Black Hills (kids are experienced cyclists with multiple tours). We would be on trails and roads going from Keystone to Crazy Horse to Hot Springs to Custer and back to Keystone. Research on the web suggests many roads have wide shoulders, but interested to hear experiences riding on roads in the area and level of safety. Thanks

From what I remember of driving in that area last summer US 385 has a fairly wide shoulder but the state routes don't. Very heavy traffic in the vicinity of Mt Rushmore and probably much the same with the Crazy Horse monument area although I think the Mickelson Trail goes close to that. I did have my bicycle with me and did a little riding in Custer State Park. Road condition there was pretty good. Currently thinking of doing the ACA Black Hills tour in 2021.
