Great Divide Mountain Bike Route Section 5 2009
« on: June 29, 2009, 11:31:06 am »
From mile 84.1 to mile 88.5 the road has become private property so access is no longer allowed. At this point, June 4, 2009, ACA does not have a way around this closure, but we are working on it. We recommend that you use the Chaco Alternate between Cuba and Grants. As soon as we have new routing we will list it on the online addenda.

What is the road condition from Gallup NM taking 491 to Shiprock and then taking 64 to Durango?

I'm planning on doing Sec. 5 starting on June 3rd, 2010 and I'm trying to figure out a way to get around the closure at the Tafoya Grant. It looks to me that I can just drop south on Forest Service road 239. On the map the cues says that the the gate is closed at El Banquito. However I called the Rangers at Mt. Taylor yesterday and they told that 239 was open all the way through. I'm tempted to just go for it but I'm wondering if anyone can give me any information on this possibility.

Any news on this closure yet? I'm hoping to be doing the route late August.

This section has been rerouted on the latest version of the map. Or you can read the addenda for the 2009 map: http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/addenda2.cfm?id=305820196&rt=Great%20Divide

Hope this helps.
