There is road construction occurring on US 12 in Idaho. They are working on shoulders and adding lanes. This pertains to all of the River Option (maps 96, 96A, 97A & 98) and the Main Route from Lowell to Kamiah (maps 95 & 96). Please ride with caution through this area.

"Adding lanes"? Does that mean it will be safer to ride on 12 from Missoula to Kamiah next summer? Right now the Motorway appears to be the safest route, and that requires a different bike than the road portions.

Adding lanes would be nice, wouldn't it? I'm not entirely sure what the scope of the end result is slated to be on this project. We received notification from a cyclist passing through so only have minimal information at this point.

I was through these roadworks in June. From what locals told me "adding shoulders" would be more accurate than "adding lanes". The road has no shoulder at all westbound, the white line is no more than one foot from the crash barrier for many miles and eastbound, i.e. away from the river the shoulders are pretty slim but at least you can go into the ditch. It is a scary road that gets used by a lot of heavy vehicles. It seems there is no decent alternative for either cyclists or heavy vehicles. I was also told that they were going to extend the length of the original improvements so, fingers crossed.

We rode the L&C trail (and highway 12) in June. The Idaho DOT site said they work 24 hrs 5 days a week so we rode through the construction portion on Saturday morning and had no issues.
