Touring Tires
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:11:56 pm »
I am doing a cross state ride on my mountian / touring bike. I am using 26" wheels, 36 spoke. I am packing light using only rear panniers and trunk bag. My route will be mostly crush limestone and some road. I am going to use my Fotre Fast City 26 X 1.25. Do you think these will hold up to the long ride and weight?

I'd think any tire would hold up for a ride across one state, unless maybe the state is Alaska. If they are not new, or you just wanna play it safe, buy and roll up one spare to carry.

Did you mean Forte, as coming from Performance Bike catalog or store?

How wide is the state?  I agree that any reasonably suitable tire should be fine for most cross state rides, since most states are only a few hundred miles across.  I would assume that the Fortes should be fine.

FWIW: I don't find a trunk bag particularly useful for touring.  That space is better used for the tent, assuming you are camping.

If the crushed limestone roads are anything like the ones I've ridden throughout the Midwest, you should be in good shape.  Back in Iowa, I was able to put 3000 miles on cyclocross tires before replacing them, so you should be in great shape with mountain bike tires.

If you're worried about punctures, you can always toss some Mr. Tuffy tire liners in there.  The 36 spoke count sounds perfect, and should be plenty sturdy for your trip.

I tour on foldable 700x23c tires and bring several extra tubes and 2 extra tires. I've never had a problem, but I tour on paved roads only.
May the wind be at your back!
