St. Louis, MO to Fort meyers FL

Brand new to touring. I'm planning a trip from st louis to fort myers starting early next summer.
I've been looking up main routes throughout the US but I'm still very unsure of which trails to take. Any advice would be more than appreciated.

I was coming home from Utah in 2006 when I left the KATY Trail at Washington MO and headed south to my home near Tarpon Springs, 35 miles north of St Petersburg on the west coast of Florida.
