Head Lamps at Campsite ~~ Annoying?
« on: July 18, 2009, 08:06:06 am »
So my husband and I are admittedly two old cooters.  We were tent camping in the Shawme-Cromwell State Park on Cape Cod for 8 days last week.  It's entirely non-electric.  Two of the campers on a site fairly proximate to ours were wearing headlamps at night.  They were majorly annoying.  Strong, translucent double beams of light right into our eyes all night long, back and forth.  Looked like Captain Eo and the Space Cadet.  I have a Petzl headlamp which I wear on the bike at night, but watching these two aliens move around their campsite is making me rethink the propriety of actually putting the things on your head at site.  Like my daddy told me when I was a girl, always carry your rifle and flashlight one way only ... pointed at the ground.  Thoughts?

Bike strong!

That eight-day week must have been a long one?

People do what is important to them.  I've gritted my teeth and tolerated televisions, campfire smoke, loud card games, parties.  Getting away mean different things to different people, I guess.  You made a memory.  If you'd been all by yourselves that eight days you wouldn't have had anything to tell us.

I'm as guilty as they next person.  I warmed up a Harley in a KOA one morning at shorty after four.  The straight pipes made an excessive amount of noise and I'm sure there were some who were gad to see me go.

A headlamp can be directed down just as easily as a flashlight can be pointed down.  The problem isn't that they had headlamps, but they they were rude and/or clueless.  They probably would have been just as bad with a hand held flashlight.

They sound like jerks to me.  I probably would have nicely asked them to discontinue the annoying behavior after awhile.  Several times I have asked other campers to quiet down late into the night, and it hasn't always worked.

We live in a narcissistic society, some people have never been made accountable, and therefore just can't perceive the effect their behavior may have on others.  Maybe by politely pointing out the problem to them, you would have had some peace and they would have learned something.

It's hard to get up the nerve sometimes to do that.  Somehow you almost feel it's your fault you have to interrupt their activities when those obnoxious activities are disturbing others!

I just go tell the office.  They'll make the noise makers quiet down if they want any repeat business from the other campers.  I've even seen them kick someone out in the middle of the night.  It doesn't have to be nighttime however for me to complain about a camper who thinks he's entitled to haunt everybody around him with his rock music.

I did go the office in the middle of the night one time, but it was closed, locked up and dark.  It was a local national forest campground. The next morning, the campsite checker came around and it turned out to be a guy I worked with seveal years previously.  The offending party was fined and kicked out, and offered me plenty of dirty looks and they packed up.

Wow this is heartening as I thought these people were exclusive to UK.  I actually avoid camp sites with "facilities" as the people who make most noise tend not to like to be unable to buy beer or plug in their music without too much effort.
