Portland Maine to New York-Best Route?

I am setting up a ride from Portland Maine to New York(city if possible) to raise awareness for debilating kidney diseases called Nephrotic Syndrome and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis(FSGS). Does anyone have suggestions as far as routes go? Has anyone done a similar ride that could share their experiences?

If you come down 1A towards Seabrook, you could camp out at Salisbury SP in MA.
Get the Rubels bike maps for MA and if you come into the Springfield MA area, you could camp in my yard.  I can the get you onto back roads, rail trails & bike paths into NYC.  Contact me off list if this would help.  Ed
