I read on anothers post that you toured from California to Prescott. I didnt want to hijack the other guys post with my question.

I live in Prescott Valley and have not been much further west, as I'm originally from back east. I want to do a tour from San Diego to Prescott, AZ this fall. You mentioned you rode the route in January.

How was the weather? I'm trying to beat the heat. I'm worried the area around Glamis will be hot still in November. I was thinking that it may be getting cold in the mountains any later than that.

Was the weather cold your last couple of hundred miles?

Hey, Levi:

San Diego to Prescott will be a great tour, and later in November would be fine.  When I rode across the USA in '07, I pedaled through Needles in the first week in Nov. and encountered temps in the low 80's--quite manageable.  If you go mid-winter like I did, you can also have excellent conditions.  You'll have a couple of frosty nights up in the mountains out of San Diego and there is some risk of snow in the mountains getting into Prescott, but that is pretty low risk.  I camped low outside of Congress and motored through Yarnell into Prescott the next day--the recommended route.

In Jan., I had daytime temps usually in the 60's--even the 70's around Lake Havasu.

One challenge of going mid-winter is the long nights and short days.  By 3:30pm it's time to think about camping.  Bring a good book and journal to take up the time.
