Southern Tier.
« on: September 18, 2009, 11:08:47 pm »
I am planning to ride the southern tier next year. I have read so far that west to east is a better way to go.
I am going alone, hoping to complete it within 6 weeks - thats all the time I can get off from work and wife.
I am fairly fit biking about 75-100 miles a week. I will be staying with friends and motels along the way.
Any help with the timing and general tips would be welcome. Thanks

if you type 'southern tier' into the "search" option above you're bound to find about 10 pages worth of threads related to the southern tier....also, read peoples' blogs that are posted on this website and/or on crazyguyonabike.com...i think you'll find enough information to read between the two until your departure date!  good luck!

I know this post is a little dated, but I thought I would serve notice here.

I am not what you would call an avid bicyclist, although a have been known to take to 2 wheels from time to time.  I am, however, an avid back-packer and outdoorsman.

I have property in the Big Thicket of East Texas within three miles of the Southern Tier Route as it passes through Romayor, TX.  I have encountered many of you biking this route in the past.

Given the growing concerns with safety in our society and my own personal biases, you might say that I am very sympathetic towards those of you who choose these long-distance adventures.  The Big Thicket of East Texas can be a risky place due to the character (or lack thereof) among its denizens.

In the past, I have hosted bicyclists travelling the Southern Tier.  So, let me go ahead encourage all here to feel free to contact me for any local information.  I enjoy meeting new people and am happy to encourage all who pursue these ventures.

Regards,

Don Strohm

Hi finished ST earlier this year and loved it.  If you need to speed up a bit try the 192 from just passed Kent across Texas to St Francisville La  Great road and places to stay, look out for the best burgers at Red Chilli  a shack along the route.  As for the folk in Texas and along the route I have to say I found everyone just great, so friendly and never felt threatened in any way.

Can't wait to get back to see you guys again next year planning Orlando to Vancouver.
Just starting to record my trips  www.tonystravels.com
