Washington DC to San Diego CA

Looking for recommendations for a route from DC to San Diego.  Purpose of ride is to raise money for Wounded Warriors.  Ride to be completed in six weeks by old Naval Academy roommates following my retirement from the Navy.

There are several ways to get to San Diego from DC using Adventure Cycling (ACA) maps.  You take the  ACA Atlantic Coast route and then connect to the Southern Tier route in St. Augustine, FL.  Or you could take the TransAm route to where it connects to the Great Rivers route.  Then follow it south until it connects to the Southern Tier route.  Or you could take the TransAm route to the Western Express.  Then take the Grand Canyon Connector to the Southern Tier.

I would recommend going on the Southern Tier in the middle of the summer.  It is hot and humid in the south and can be very hot and dry in the west.

Note: I assume you meant, "I would not recommend going on the Southern Tier in the middle of the summer."

The TA is very nice.  I highly recommend it.

Oops.  I did mean "not" in the summer.

My wife and I will be doing something similar next April. We will be going from San Diego to D.C. We plan on using ACA route, Southern Tier until about the New Mexico border, then heading north through N.M. via Santa Fe, Taos, etc. to Pueblo, Co. From there we can pick up the TransAm and have a straight shot to D.C. I would prefer ACA routes the whole way, but the mileage was too much for our time available. The route we settled on is about 3500 miles. Using all ACA routes, some ST, some Grand Canyon Connector, and some TransAm was over 4500 miles.
