The AC Web presence is fun and informative but the real benefits of the organization are only realized when you join. One of the best is Adventure Cyclist magazine.

I am too excited to join right now. Just informed my family that I am biking out. I am waiting for the floor to drop.
Just realized how important warm showers org. is! Its okay to cover 1000 miles in 10 days.
But, what if things do not go as one plans! It could be 20 or 30 days instead! That adds up.

I have to agree. Don't know how they do it on a small budget, but they get some of the best outdoor writing around.

Huh?  I am not sure what you are saying here.  Care to clarify?

FWIW: Warm showers is great, but on any of the routes I have ridden you would be lucky to find a host on your route once every two or three weeks.  So unless you plan the route specifically around warm shower host locations they will probably be a once in a while thing.

That said on the Trans America we managed to stay for free or real cheap most of the time between city/town parks, churches, hiker/biker sites, and hosts we met along the way without the need for warm showers hosts.  Most of the time we were in our tent, but a few folks offered us a bed or a floor including several churches who let us stay indoors.

On my Spring tour this year I camped for free a bit more than half the time (several town parks and one church yard).  Since the motels were really reasonably priced in Kansas and Oklahoma and there was a thunderstorm about the time I rolled into town several evenings, the rest of the time I stayed in reasonably priced motels.  The nights that I got a room I am sure I could have found a free place to stay if I had looked/asked around.

In the middle of the country I found that there was seldom a problem just pitching a tent in the town park, but if I had the chance I usually asked the local police for advice.  Sometimes the local librarian, the clerk at the minimart, someone at the local church, or someone at the local firehouse will point you to a place you can stay and not be bothered.

Hi,
Thank you for your post. I like the way you think. Your ideas are a very common sense approach to the situation. Thank you for bringing that typo up! I think an extra zero would help to clarify. You people are grand! (oh! FWIW means: for whats its worth.) Grin. I'm getting there...

1. Will be thinking of clothing choices now and practice packing.
2. Will be thinking of visiting as many bike shops as soon as possible. (wish it was warm enough to bike)
3. Need to try to figure out what kind of bike I already have.
4. Call and join ACA asap.
5. Nutrition is going to be paramount!

Sounds like we'll have to tie you down until it's warm enough to ride where you are :) Reminds me of the time I received my custom touring bike late in the autumn, and spent the winter with it hooked up to a mag trainer and dreaming of the places I'd go while spinning away in my basement.

Another thing you should brush up on is bike repair and maintenance. You could join a bicycle cooperative or a community bike shop — click here to find one near you. In the one in my city, people volunteer to work on discarded or donated bikes which are then sold cheaply, or given to people who can't afford one. There are master mechanics to train and guide you, and you get one hour of shop time to work on your own bike for every hour you volunteer. It's a great way to meet people and learn from each other, and gain confidence in really knowing your bike inside out.

Bike repair.Thank you. I went to the website you recommended. Only one place was
listed in this state. It was not local.  So, how would I go about getting one started here?

Maybe you could ask the folks at the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Looks like they organize a lot of activities including a bike swap. Or you could visit bike coops elsewhere and talk to them about how they've organized themselves. It certainly requires a good group of like-minded people.
