It's 15 below zero this morning...

Woke up this morning to -15 F this morning, I think that's -26 C.  :o

I wonder if I should go out for a ride? I bet the traction is fine in the few inches of snow we have laying about...

In SE Michigan it was 25 F last night when I went for a ride with my new NOKIAN studded bike tires.  They did great on the ice, hardpack, crunch, and corn snow.  I really had to work in powder, as my tires don't have really big knobs.

Do they help the steering or only rear drive traction?

I live here in central Michigan and have been riding with just an agressive mtb knobby tire . I have found the only time I need to use my studded tires is on pure ice . The other thing I do is switch my pedals to BMX platform pedals , it really helps when the bike starts slidding out from under you , it is easy to just let it go and not have to unclip . It is slow but fun to get out and ride the trails in the winter .

Don't bother coming down to South Florida. It's been very cold by our standards - for almost a week now.

Today (Friday) should be OK but tomorrow's forecast calls for highs in the mid 50's F with rain. Low temps on Sunday morning may dip into the 30's!

The carbide studs only make a difference on ice.  Otherwise, its a knobby tire.  But on ice, it is amazing.  I ride the I-275 pathway a lot, and there was a descent behind a Target store that pretty iced that I rode down totally under control.  As I was gliding down, I thought, "I could be so screwed right now".

Man, it was even cold in San Diego this morning.  I had to wear shirt when running on the beach!
